My wife Jennifer said to me recently: “There are two things that people dislike…the way things are and change.” As we enter into 2020, I wonder if we find ourselves stuck in the truth of that statement; not liking what last year was like and yet dreading to make any changes. I know life happens and that some things are beyond our control. Yet, in the midst of the storms that come to every believer, We Have A Choice! We can choose to trust in the promises that God gave to us contained in His Word. We can truly trust Jesus when said He would never leave us or forsake us. We can truly believe Jesus when He said He would send the Comforter – the Holy Spirit – and He would be with you ALWAYS.
As the New Year awaits us with open arms, may the Prayer of St. Paul echo in your lives resulting in a marvelous and glorious journey of faith with our Lord Jesus. Listen to what Ephesians 1:17-19a says to us: “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
Make this year the year that you have your eye on the goal where God is beckoning us onward to Jesus. Make this the year that you don’t turn back to old sinful thinking and habits – but rather you run forward reaching for Christ. Make no mistake: when you desire God like you desire your next breath after you’ve been under water for two minutes, then something incredible will occur in your life. “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13) Once you experience God’s Love, you can never turn back. He just keeps calling deeper still into his marvelous love.
Eugene Peterson, in his book The Message, paraphrased Philippians 3 in such a beautiful way. In it Peterson encourages us to not to be stagnant in our spiritual walk, but rather, be off and running, remaining focused on Jesus. He writes:“I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision— you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.” (Philippians 3:13-16, The Message)
May God continue to strengthen and use you for the glory of His Kingdom as you submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit through the power of His infallible Word. We, the Leadership of Church of The Resurrection, agree and align ourselves with God’s Word as we pray this prayer over your life: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” Will you allow God’s Grace and Love to do that in you? Grace and Peace to you,
