Ordination of New Ruling Elders

Sunday, April 15th at morning worship

At our Congregational Meeting in worship on Sunday, March 25th, Fritz Barnard and Tom Connor were unanimously chosen to serve as new Ruling Elders for Church of the Resurrection and our Presbyterian Church in America. This has been a 9-month process of leadership training. With the congregation's approval these two men now move on to Ordination as Ruling Elders. Come on this day to celebrate and cheer them on.

Daily Praise & Prayer

During March we experimented with Intentional Prayer offering opportunities Monday thru Friday to gather for intercession for Church of the Resurrection, our community, our world, and your special needs. People appreciated learning that we were praying for them daily by name. They felt encouraged. We also became far more aware of our brother’s and sister’s needs as we faithfully remembered them before God’s throne of grace. We also became far more aware of our issues in Flagstaff needing prayer. Fur-thermore, the daily newspaper became our prayer list as we powerfully projected God’s grace into a hurting world.

Often the “gathering” ended up being one designated intercessor before an audience of One. However, this was profoundly meaningful and several of our intercessors want to continue to pray. Come and meet with us as you are led by the Spirit of God. 

Monday through Friday:

Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.

Our brothers and sisters in South Korea have a wise saying: “No prayer. No power.” “Little prayer. Little power.” "Much prayer. Much power."

 Prayer is the heart of the Christian faith and the power of the Christian life. Modern Christian mystic Frank Laubach wrote a marvelously challenging book entitled Prayer: the Mightiest Force in the World. I wonder if any of us really believe that. If we did, we would pray a whole lot more. And we would know in our personal experience the Almighty God of the Bible. These thoughts have led me to present a bold initiative for the members and friends of Church of the Resurrection for the month of March 2012.

Individuals and families at Church of the Resurrection are embracing the opportunity to bring children out of poverty through the ministry of Compassion International. As we worship on Compassion Sunday, Alan and Pat Purchase will share about their experience of sponsoring two children in poverty and the blessing this has been. Come on this Lord's Day, worship the Lord, and glorify Him by prayerfully considering sponsoring a child.

 "Every day do something that won't compute. Love the Lord. Love the world. Work for nothing. Love someone who does not deserve it. Plant sequoia. Be joyful though you have considered the facts. Practice resurrection." (Wendell Berry, American Novelist and Poet)

 What would it look like to "practice resurrection" each day? We often think of the Resurrection as an event in sacred history which validated the life and teaching of Jesus and launched the Christian faith. It has brought wonder into our world. It stands as a unique happening in world history. It is a symbol of hope and joy. If I were to practice resurrection, I'd focus on doing the following things:

 I would do those things which would increase my devotion to the Resurrected One. I would pray to the Risen Lord in silent prayer, asking for an infusion of wonder to sustain me in this challenging world. I would worship His majesty and sing songs to daily enliven my heart to be happy in Jesus. I would daily rekindle the flame of devotion which has burned brightly in my heart, but which can grow dim with the daily assaults of a secular culture opposed to the Living God. 

 I would yearn to see reality with the eyes of Jesus. I would seek to see people as Jesus sees them and choose to focus on their potential as children of God. I would not see them as evil, but as needy and hurting. I would focus on His gifts to me and be grateful. I would look for and recognize beauty and even create beauty if given the opportunity. As the Lord prays for us (Hebrews 7:25) I would look over His shoulder and look at the world through His eyes so my praying would be motivated by His compassion. 

 I would walk in the footsteps of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21) seeking to grace this world through personal sacrifice. I would try to bring love to the unlovely, hope to the hopeless, healing to the hurting, and joy to the jaded. Giving myself away for kingdom purposes would become my passion. Then, the people around me would begin to discover by His grace that our dark fridays can be transformed into glorious Easter Sundays. I would cultivate a butterfly nursery and release more wings of hope and plant more wildflower seeds in barren, rocky places. I would get creative seeking to grace this world to His glory. 

 I would emphasize more my availability to God rather than my limited ability. "Use me, Lord!" would become my mantra, "and help my preoccupation with myself become a thing of the past." Each morning I would declare my openness to divine appointments throughout the day and trust the Lord to bring people across my path so that I could offer a word of encouragement or share a random act of kindness. Truly, many people live lives of quiet desperation and I would sign up for service to be His serendipity in the lives of satiated, sad people. Belonging to the Lord, the possibilities for joyful service are virtually unlimited. 

 Practice resurrection? Why not? The Risen One is not just the Lord of History but our Contemporary.

 Church of the Resurrection Opens a New YOUTH CENTER

January will be a month of preparing the new Youth Center in the space (suite 1205) next to our Learning Center. Our landlord is willing to work with us to use the space for youth at a discounted rate. New carpeting...painting...lighting… and a new sign will be in working progress in the coming weeks. Room dividers will be needed. Do you have furniture that you would like to donate for the Center? 

It is going to be great and we are excited! The new Youth Center will house our new Youth Fellowship, Pioneer Clubs, and childcare for adult classes. This extra space will greatly enhance our ministry to children, youth, and families.

We have some wonderful people stepping up to help with ministry to children and youth. Will you help them? For Pioneer Clubs, call Paula Off at (928) 607-5931 or call the church office at(928) 699-2715. For Youth Ministry, call Pastor Bob at (928) 699-7592.
