About Our Church

About the PCA

     The Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) was formed to be a denomination that is "Faithful to the Scriptures, True to the Reformed Faith, and Obedient to the Great Commission." Bible-believing Presbyterians began the PCA in 1973, with 260 congregations and 41,000 members. The PCA is one of the fastest-growing Presbyterian denominations in North America, and is among the fastest growing of all Christian denominations. There are now 375,000 members in the PCA nationwide.

     The PCA is an Evangelical and Reformed Presbyterian denomination. By Evangelical, we mean that we emphasize the gospel (good news of salvation) through faith in Jesus Christ, as well as affirming other orthodox Christian doctrines and holding to the inerrancy of Scripture.

     By Reformed, we mean that we are connected to the teachings of the historic church and the doctrinal beliefs recovered by the Reformation. These doctrinal beliefs are expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. All officers of the Presbyterian Church in America must personally subscribe to and uphold the teachings of the Westminster Confession of Faith.

     By Presbyterian, we describe our representative form of church government. Local churches are governed by a "Session of presbyters" (elders), elected by the members of the congregation. Representatives of local churches within a geographical area compose a "presbytery." Representatives of presbyteries meet annually at "General Assembly." Thus, through the combined efforts and resources of all of the churches, we are enabled to advance God's Kingdom much more effectively. The Committees and Agencies of the PCA help lead this Kingdom work.

Church History and Future

     Church of the Resurrection was born in the heart of God. As leaders in the Presbyterian Church in America prayed for Flagstaff, the vision for a new church plant became reality. In the spring of 2002, Brad Bradley met with Pastor Bob Norton. Although Pastor Bob was serving with another congregation, he encouraged Brad Bradley and the PCA to plant a new church to reach people for Christ.

     Sensing God’s leading to unite with the PCA, Pastor Bob met with Pastor Mark Roessler, Chair of Missions for the Southwest Presbytery. This historic, divine appointment occurred in November of 2006. They began a process of discernment which culminated with the transfer of ordination for Bob Norton to become a Teaching Elder in the PCA effective July 20, 2007.

     The Steering Committee gathered and plans came to fruition for a Sunday, October 7, 2007, launch at DeMiguel Elementary School. After one year, the church moved its worship service to the Commons at Coconino Community College effective October 5, 2008.

     The Learning Center, located at 751 E. Pine Knoll Dr, became our headquarters for ministry with a dedication gathering on Holy Saturday, April 11, 2009. Our offices, counseling center, and educational programs are housed there. By God’s grace we are a truly great church in the making. As we were born in the heart of God, so only God knows what this church can become. We are committed to living for His glory and trusting Him to perpetuate “a vision for greatness” in our hearts as we seek to be faithful witnesses to the living Christ.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be the glory in the church in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21
